“Sustainable Development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” Gro Harlem Brutland.
Two concepts are inherent in this notion:
The concept of “Needs”, and more particularly the essential needs of the most deprived, to which the highest priority should be given.
The idea of the limitations that the state of our technology and our social organization imposes on the capacity of the environment to respond to current and future needs.
The Brundtland Report "Our Common Future" was written in 1987 by the World Commission on Environment and Development of the United Nations , chaired by the Norwegian Gro Harlem Brundtland . Used as a basis for the 1992 Earth Summit , this report used for the first time the expression " sustainable development".
Several documents thus come from this major conference where the concept of sustainable development was born (source and Wikipedia link):
The Action 21 program (often referred to by its English title: Agenda 21)
The Rio Declaration on Environment and Development
The Declaration of Principles on Forests

“ The year 2015 presented an unprecedented and historic opportunity to bring countries and people together to choose and pursue new paths forward to improve the lives of people everywhere. These choices will shape the global path forward to end poverty, promote prosperity and well-being for all, protect the environment and address climate change . In September 2015, countries adopted a new sustainable development agenda, structured around 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This agreement is the culmination of a concerted effort with governments, civil society and other partners to build on the momentum of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to define an ambitious post-2015 development agenda. UN Member States also had the opportunity to reach a global agreement on climate change in December in Paris. You can explore what the UN and its partners are doing to build a better world ” (UNDP).
The 194 members of the United Nations international community adopted the 17 SDGs in New York on September 25, 2015, in a spirit of prosperity, well-being and peace. This was done based on the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental, through a charter voted by all these countries for the creation of a better world.
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) , a United Nations program launched by Kofi Annan, aimed at halving extreme poverty between 2000 and 2015, served as a common framework for action and cooperation at the global level. Significant progress has been made within this framework, notably by lifting approximately 1 billion people out of poverty, considerably improving access to education, particularly for girls, reducing infant mortality and access to drinking water. The SDGs are a continuation of the MDGs, knowing that they are aimed at everyone, both in the North and the South. They are universal.

Situation France March 2023
After the 1st International Conference on Financing for Development in 2002 in Monterrey (Mexico), and the 2nd in Doha (Qatar) in 2008, Africa hosted the 3rd International Conference on Financing the New SDGs, in the Fight Against Poverty, in July 2015, in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). More than ever, it is time to accelerate the pace in the search for solutions and to track innovative financing for development. These changes are within our reach!
Let us continue our efforts hand in hand to achieve a paradigm shift driven by a common will.
